The premise behind the freshly minted AliveShoes label is less of a straight shot than most. After the sneakers are cobbled together, they're delivered in bulk to an artist somewhere on the globe, where they're mobilized as part of a large-scale installation. Once the public sculpture is complete and allowed to linger for a time, the shoes are separated once more for distribution to the footwear-wearing community at large.

Instead of leaving wayward brollies high and dry, Italian designer Cecilia Felli, rescues and rehabilitates them into twirl-worthy skirts, complete with the original spokes and dangling Velcro straps. Although one of a kind, each skirt is one size fits all, thanks to an adjustable belt that tops off each colorful ensemble with a sweet bow.

Adie and George never had the pleasure of each other’s acquaintance but that hasn’t stopped their granddaughters from playing retroactive matchmaker. Casey Larkin (Mr. Larkin) and Sasha Duerr(Permacouture Institute) bandied around several names for their collaborative knitwear collection before landing on the monikers of their biological forebears—perfectly apropos when you consider the heritage nature of the 100 percent West Coast line.

“Quality, not quantity” is a mantra Gitman Vintage aims to live by. Choosing to focus on the Oxford, one of the most iconic staples of men’s fashion, the Gitman Brothers spinoff combines classic styling and heritage fabrics to create its sharply tailored sport shirts. Founded in 1978, the label more than remembers its roots. In fact, the Vintage collection consciously pulls fabrics from its archives. (Spring/Summer 2010, for example, is a facsimile of Spring/Summer 1984.)
